Born in Hong Kong and educated in Britain, the young Samuel spent so much time tinkering in the school workshop that a career in design seemed a matter of course. Samuel's formal training culminated in a Masters in furniture design from Buckinghamshire University. In 1995 he launched his company, Channels, with not just a studio-showroom in London but also his own workshop - to demonstrate the equal importance he gives to design and craft. Over the years his work has consistently expressed a preoccupation with clean lines and proportion; as one commentator notes, "There is an uncommon logic to Chan's designs".
